Our history The Wigan Transport Trust was established in March 2004 from the Wigan Transport Society, which had repatriated former Wigan Corporation Panther Cub No 20 from Malta. The society also organised the successful Wigan 100 rally in September 2002, marking 100 years since the formation of Wigan Corporation Transport. Aims The Trust's aims are the preservation, restoration and display of Wigan's road public transport history, the focus being the period up to 1974 before the area was absorbed in to the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive. We will do this by restoring our vehicles and displaying them at rallies, running days and similar events. The collection Our collection comprises of former Wigan Corporation vehicles and other items from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The collection also includes later vehicles representative of public transport in Wigan up to bus deregulation in 1986. We have former Wigan Corporation machines from Wigan coach builders Massey and Northern Counties represented in the collection in single deck, double deck, rear, front and dual door configurations on front, mid and rear engined chassis, all from Leyland, who Wigan Corpy were loyal customers of for almost as long as Leyland were making buses. Details of the vehicles can be found on the collections page. We are housed on a farm in West Lancashire near Rufford and the purpose of this building is to provide a secure storage and restoration environment for our vehicles. However due to the limitations of the site we are not open to the public as a museum, although private visits can be arranged. Instead we have adopted the "rolling museum" approach, and we regularly take vehicles to events where the sight and sound of them can be enjoyed by the public.
