The Collection

The "core collection" of vehicles  covers the period from 1953 with our Leyland Royal Tiger and ends with Wigan No 9, the oldest surviving example of the AN68 version of the Atlantean. All of the Wigan Corporation vehicles are Leyland machines with bodywork supplied by Wigan coach builders Massey or Northern Counties.

Individual vehicle histories will be added in due course and each vehicle's page can be found by following the links below. There is a quick reference table at the foot of this page.

Wigan No 4 - a Leyland PD2 with a Massey Body. Delivered to Wigan Corporation in 1957, No 4 is currently undergoing major restoration at the WTT premises.

Wigan No 9 - The only surviving Wigan Corporation Atlantean and the last former Municipal bus in service with GMT. No 9 has a Northern Counties body. No 9 is currently stood down from the rally circuit.

Wigan No 20 - One of only four surviving Leyland Panther Cubs. No 20 was brought back from Malta and became the first British bus to be repatriated from the island. No 20 has a Massey body and is awaiting restoration.

Wigan No 35 - The latest vehicle to enter the collection. No 35 is a PD2A with a Massey body and a "St Helens front."

Wigan No 103 - The oldest vehicle in the collection. This Leyland Royal Tiger was delivered in 1953 and was one of four from that year. 103 has a Northern Counties body and worked for Wigan Corporation until 1973. No 103 awaits restoration and is currently stored off site.

Wigan No 113 - Northern Counties bodied  No 113 worked for Wigan in the Corporation and GMT eras, then being sold on for further, non PSV, use. No 113 is awaiting restoration.

The "wider collection" features buses that have played a part in Wigan's transport story after 1974. They represent the changes in the bus industry from the creation, along with the metropolitan counties, of the expanded Passenger Transport Executives from 1974 up to deregulation in 1986.

LUT 515 - The first bus delivered to Lancashire United Transport in orange livery, LUT at the time being a subsidiary of Greater Manchester Transport. Sold to Yorkshire Rider in 1987, 515 (by then GMT's 6931) became 7235 at their Halifax depot. 515 is awaiting restoration.

GMT 3253 - The last bus to be delivered new to Wigan depot before deregulation, 3253 is an Olympian with coach seats and was the first "Express" bus in Wigan.

MPTE 6036 - Information to follow.

GMT 8763 - The last Atlantean delivered new to Wigan Depot and the final Atlantean in service with First at Bolton. 8763 is also reputed to be the last Standard Atlantean delivered to GMT.
